Map of Texas short after the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo between the U.S. and Mexico that ended the Mexican–American War (1846–48). The map was published in the German town of Elberfeld (now a municipal subdivision of Wuppertal) by J. Bädeker Verlag. There is an inset map of Castroville, a town established in 1844 20 miles west of San Antonio by Henri Castro, who brought several dozen European families to the area from Alsace and Baden to populate the city.
