Gulf of Finland (1780)
The Gulf of Finland is the easternmost arm of the Baltic Sea. It extends between Finland (to the north) and Estonia (to the south) all the way to Saint Petersburg in Russia, where the river Neva drains into it. This map was made by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688–1766), one of the leading mapmakers in France during the 18th century. In 1757 Robert de Vaugondy and his son Didier published “The Atlas Universel,” one of the most important atlases of that time.
In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV. Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced more than 500 maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son.
