Puerto Rico (1886)
Map of Puerto Rico published by G.W. & C.B Colton & Co of New York in 1886. In that year Puerto Rico was still an Spanish colony. The map shows the colonial era puertorican provinces. On July 25, 1898, during the Spanish–American War, the U.S. invaded Puerto Rico with a landing at Guánica. As an outcome of the war, Spain ceded Puerto Rico, along with the Philippines and Guam, then under Spanish sovereignty, to the U.S. under the Treaty of Paris. Spain relinquished sovereignty over Cuba, but did not cede it to the U.S. In 1914, the Puerto Rican House of Delegates voted unanimously in favor of independence from the United States.
