This map of Baltimore and region was made by the French military officer Louis-Alexandre Berthier in 1781. It is manuscript, pen-and-ink and watercolor. Shows fortifications, troop encampments, and roads from "White Marsh," "Frederick Town," and "Spuriens". Berthier (1753-1815) went to North America in 1780, short after the American Revolutionary War. Later he became Marshal of France, Vice-Constable of France beginning in 1808, and Chief of Staff under Napoleon.
